About

The DOSA Project (Diagnostics for One health and user driven Solutions for Anti-microbial resistance) is an interdisciplinary research project which brings together nine leading academic institutions, five from India and four from the UK. The project will develop innovative diagnostics to curb antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which is one of the biggest threats to global public health. AMR describes the situation when infectious agents such as bacteria are becoming resistant to the medicines used to treat them. DOSA will involve diagnostic innovators, medical researchers, economists, design researchers and social scientists to create cutting edge, rapid diagnostic solutions to fight AMR in community healthcare, dairy and aquaculture settings in India. This work is also being seen as an opportunity to build capability and capacity in the use of social science and user centred design research approaches to tackle AMR in India.

AMR is a major public health concern in India with high levels of resistance across multiple pathogens and even affecting newer and more expensive drugs, such as carbapenems. Contributing factors to the increase of AMR in India are complex and include inappropriate and over use in humans and animals. Rapid diagnostics are considered essential tools in the fight against AMR but they are either unavailable, too expensive or do not fit the needs of people who want to use them.

For these reasons, DOSA engages intensely with users in the three settings to better understand their needs, the current antibiotic use and AMR situation and co-design diagnostic solutions which are addressed by the diagnostic innovator teams in DOSA.

The project is jointly funded by UK Research and Innovation Economic and Social Research Council, the Newton Fund, and Government of India’s Department of Biotechnology.
