The Silchar Medical College and Hospital was established in the year 1968. It is a government-run medical college cum hospital in Silchar in southern Assam, and is one of the oldest medical college of North East India. It is the only referral hospital in the southern part of Assam, also referred to as the Barak Valley, and since its inception it is rendring its services to the entire southern part of Assam and neighbouring states including Mizoram, North Tripura, West Manipur and South Meghalaya. The huge three-storied hospital building houses the departments like Casualty Department, Various O.P.D.s, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Dept, Medicine Dept, Radiology Dept, E.N.T. Dept, Ophthalmology Dept, Orthopaedic Dept, General Surgery Dept, Paediatrics Dept, Cardiology Dept, Dermatology Dept, Psychhiatry Dept, Clinical Pathology Dept, Blood Bank including wards, operation theatres, X-Rays, Laboratory facilities etc. There is another separate three-storied block for the Dept. of Pathology and Microbiology. The departments of Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases as well as the isolation wards are situated in separate buildings within the college campus a little away from the main hospital building. The Medical Council of India (MCI) recognized the MBBS degree in 1976. In 1985 postgraduate courses were also introduced in five clinical subjects viz. General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology

Dr. Debadatta Dhar is Associate professor and Incharge HOD of the Department of Microbiology of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar, Assam.She is the Nodal person of VRDL, NACO SRL and IDSP SRL in her medical College. She has completed her MD in Medical Microbiology from Gauhati Medical College, Gauhati University in the year 2003. She has a total of 26 publications which includes 18 international and 8 national publications. She has also been the chairperson of International Conference on Contemporary Antimicrobial Research (ICCAR) 2016, MICROCON 2014 & 2016,NERCON 2017 and acted as invited speaker in Assam MICROCON 2018.

She is acting as an examiner of some reputed universities such as University of Delhi, West Bengal University of Health Sciences,  Srimanta Sankardeb University and few others for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate examination. She is acting as Member Secretary of Infection Control Committee and Resource person of Medical Education Unit of SMCH. She is also acting as a Co-Guide of few PhD candidates.

She has completed few projects funded by ICMR and DBT. She has done certificate course on Internal  Audit and QMS.
