Assam University, Silchar (a Central University) was established by an Act of Parliament promulgated in 1989 (Act XXIII) and enforced by a Notification of the Government of India in January 1994. The sprawling University campus at Silchar is spread over an area of about 600 acres on which there are 38 Academic departments and 6 Interdisciplinary Centres including School of Technology. The University provides state of- the-art facilities to students coming from different parts of the country and abroad. The current roll strength is around 4500 at the post graduate and Integrated Courses including around 1500 M. Phil, and Ph.D at research levels. These apart, there are nearly 25,000 students in the affiliated and permitted colleges in the five districts of south Assam which together constitute the jurisdiction of Assam University.

Dr. Amitabha Bhattacharjee is currently working as Assistant Professor in the department of Microbiology at Assam University, Silchar, India. Dr. Amitabha Bhattacharjee has completed his M.Sc. from University of Madras, Chennai in Applied Microbiology and obtained his Ph.D. degree from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He did post doctoral research in Eastman Dental Institute, University College London, UK.  He has joined Assam University, Silchar in the year 2009, before joining this university he worked as Consultant Microbiologist in Orchid Pharmaceuticals, Chennai. Dr. Bhattacharjee is working on molecular basis of antimicrobial resistance, transmission dynamics, stability and fitness of antibiotic resistance determinants.
